Established in 1974, Art Metropole is a non-profit organization, member of the Canadian Museums Association (CMA) and the Art Librarians Society of North America (ARLIS/NA), as well as of the Artist-Run Centres and Collectives of Ontario (ARCCO). In 2009, Art Metropole acquired charitable status from the Canada Customs and Revenue Agency.
Since its inception, Art Metropole has received annual operating support from the Canada Council for the Arts, the Ontario Arts Council, and the Toronto Arts Council. Past special projects have been financially supported by the Ontario Trillium Foundation, FEDDEV for Southern Ontario, Heritage Canada, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Embassy of Canada, Berlin, Consulat général de France à Toronto and Institut français, and private foundations and sponsors.
