Description

Tom Phillips once entered a book shop in the mid-60’s and-based apparently on only how much change he had on him-bought the first book he could afford there. The book was an 1892 work by one William Hurrell Mallock, entitled ‘A Human Document’. Phillips went on to apply painting, collage and drawing to each page, always leaving a few selected words peeking through. Going through multiple versions throughout the years, this 1985 version is from roughly three quarters through the more than a dozen Humument variations so far, from the artist that managed to televise the first eight Cantos of Dante’s Inferno.
