Description

The artist used found images of seized, recovered and unclaimed objects taken from Police Auctions Canada on Ebay.

Ma recontextualizes the seemingly arbitrary groupings of consumer items photographed for police auction as snapshots of the contemporary Canadian home.

That the objects in Ma’s Three-volume zine were once the focus or proceeds of criminal activity is barely betrayed by the displays of mundane objects such as electronics, socks, umbrellas and batteries. The displays appear devoid of any trace of the malice or desperation with which the objects were once connected, not to mention the merchandising, window dressing, glamourization and enhancements that accompany the presentation of consumer goods.
