Artist
Scott Treleaven

Art Metropole is very pleased to announce the publication of Scott Treleaven’s THE SALiVATION ARMY BLACK BOOK. Please join us for a book launch and reception for the artist on Friday March 17, from 6 to 9 PM. Art Metropole is located at 788 King Street West.

Co-published with Printed Matter Inc., THE SALiVATION ARMY BLACK BOOK brings together all ten issues of Treleaven’s infamous zine, This Is the Salivation Army, produced between 1996 and 2004. Bound into a soft black embossed cover and adorned with three black ribbon bookmarks and black gilt edges, the book features 345 pages of facsimiles of the zine, expanded texts, new collages, and prefaces by Genesis Breyer P-Orridge of Throbbing Gristle and Scott Treleaven. The signed and numbered edition of 666 includes sixty copies with a limited edition silkscreen insert, and six deluxe edition copies with collaged colour silkscreens. The New York launch of this edition coincided with Scott Treleaven’s first solo show at John Connelly Presents, which opened Saturday, February 18.

This Is the Salivation Army was originally intended to run for only eight issues, from 1996 to 1999. With its unique combination of punk aesthetics, Blakean mysticism and sexually explicit, radical queer posturing, the zine immediately attracted press, suspicion, and a loyal cult following. During its initial three year run, the Salivation Army spawned a number of spin-off zines, set up headquarters in Toronto, Prague, London, and New York, and held a series of public and private occultural events aimed at putting the Army’s magical theory into practice.

Three years after the zine went into hibernation, Treleaven released an account of his experiences in the film “The Salivation Army” (officially considered issue #9 of the zine), which was hailed by The Village Voice as one of the most notable underground films of 2002. Widely screened and rapidly inspiring a second wave of recruits, the film’s success prompted a ‘best-of’ reprint of the zines by Art Metropole. With the publication of THE SALiVATION ARMY BLACK BOOK, Art Metropole and Printed Matter are honored to bring you the latest – and possibly final – incarnation of Treleaven’s decade long project. The collages, drawings, photographs, texts and testimonies from over fifty contributors bring the Salivation Army to eternal life even as the zine itself is seemingly being laid to rest.

Scott Treleaven is a Toronto-born artist, filmmaker and writer. His work incorporates collage, film, installation and photography, and has been exhibited by John Connelly Presents, NY, Marc Selwyn Fine Art, LA, Kavi Gupta Gallery, Chicago, Galerie du jour agnès b., Paris, and many others.
