Open Call: Treasurer, Art Metropole Board of Directors

Are you a finance or accounting professional — or student nearing the end of your training — looking for a rewarding volunteer opportunity? Joining the Board of Directors at Art Metropole as Treasurer is a chance to apply your financial expertise in a dynamic arts environment while gaining valuable board experience. This is an exciting opportunity to support not just Toronto’s arts scene, but also a nationally and internationally recognized institution that champions artist-driven culture.

Art Metropole is an internationally renowned artist-run centre dedicated to the appreciation and advancement of conceptual art. Founded in 1974 by the influential artist collective General Idea, Art Metropole has played a pivotal role in supporting and distributing artist’s books, multiples, and other experimental art forms. In addition to its publishing and distribution efforts, Art Metropole operates a bookstore in Toronto, serving as a hub for artists and art enthusiasts alike. With a commitment to innovative formats and emergent technologies, Art Metropole serves as a vital platform for artists locally, nationally, and globally.

    About the Treasurer Role

As Treasurer, you will provide financial oversight and guidance to help Art Metropole continue its important work. This volunteer role requires a commitment of approximately 5 to 15 hours per month. Working closely with the Executive Director and Bookkeeper, your responsibilities will include:

  1. -Overseeing and providing feedback on the preparation and quarterly review of the annual budget.
  2. -Supporting the presentation of financial reports and recommendations to the Board.
  3. -Providing strategic business guidance to support the bookstore’s sustainability and growth.
  4. -Working directly with the Executive Director, providing advice and guidance on accounting policy, complex transactions, cash flow management, and other financial challenges as needed.
  5. -Stewarding the organization through its annual review, including direct oversight of the audit process and communication with Art Metropole's auditors.
  6. -Presenting audited financial statements at the Annual General Meeting.
  7. Who Should Apply?

We are looking for candidates with experience in financial management, accounting, audit or bookkeeping. CPA training (whether completed or in progress) is a strong asset, but not required. A passion for the arts and an interest in nonprofit governance are equally important. This role is perfect for finance professionals eager to contribute their expertise to a well-established arts organization while enhancing their own leadership skills.

    General Board Responsibilities

-In addition to the Treasurer’s duties, board members commit to actively participate in:

-Preparing for and attending virtual board meetings (held every second Tuesday of every other month).

-Fundraising and donor engagement to support Art Metropole’s financial sustainability.

-Reviewing and refining the organization's mission, objectives, and policies.

-Monitoring and evaluating the organization’s performance.

-Acting as ambassadors to promote Art Metropole’s work and values.

To apply, please send a short email outlining your interest in the role and the skills you bring, along with a current resume or LinkedIn profile to board@artmetropole.com by March 28th. Please include “Treasurer Application” in the subject line.

This is a unique opportunity to apply your financial expertise in an inspiring and creative setting. Join us in shaping the future of Art Metropole!
