Child Eater presents range of visual imagery associated with the specific cultural milieus of Northern Ontario, Southern Germany and Transylvania. These places become surreally stereotyped yet grounded in reality in the pages of the book. The material language of North American suburban rec rooms is confused with that of Hansel and Gretel and the Universal Studios / Hammer Films horror movie landscape. Here, souvenir kitsch items, cuckoo clocks, fake Black Forest cake and plastic vampire teeth point as much to Niagara Falls theme restaurants as they do to German folk culture.
