Book launch: ma ma at The Table

Art Metropole is thrilled to announce the launch of ma ma at The Table, an experimental artists’ cookbook produced as a part of a collaboration between The Table (Brittany Shepherd) and ma ma (Heather Canlas Rigg and Magdalyn Asimakis). Please join us at Art Metropole on Thursday May 15th to celebrate the launch of ma ma at The Table with food and drinks.

ma ma at The Table began in 2019 through a collaboration with Brittany Shepherd’s The Table. A dinner took place on a hot July day with fifteen guests, where ma ma shared some of the foods they grew up eating. The evening unfolded through sharing a meal, reading out loud together, and discussing how familial relationships to food function as sources of knowledge. The invitation asked guests to consider what they have learned through a particular dish: What was it? How did you learn through it? What was lost, or gained in translation?

This publication collects the 15 stories from that night, which weave together themes of familial knowledge, diasporic practices, love, grief, and spirituality. The expansive and experimental cookbook brings together personal recipes, photographs, and reflections on the emotive and embodied impact of food.
