Edition launch for Miguel Jacob and Luis Jacob's Household Fame

Luis Jacob and Miguel Jacob
2 pm - 5 pm

Art Metropole presents a new fundraising edition launch on Saturday June 18th.

The edition, titled Household Fame is a collaboration between Luis Jacob and the photographer Miguel Jacob, a color photograph 14 × 11 inches in an edition of 30, signed and numbered by the two brothers. challenged viewers to send in images of themselves, dressed in extraordinary costumes honouring the legacy of the great cultural iconoclast Leigh Bowery. Miguel Jacob (with Luis Jacob) won the competition with this image.

Born and raised in Lima, Peru, Miguel Jacob worked as an English and French teacher both in Canada and France before starting his career in photography in 2004 without any formal training. Household Fame was one of the four photographs selected by stylist and judge Simon Foxton as part of a Leigh Bowery competition organized by SHOWstudio in November 2004.

Luis is one of great young stars from the Queen Street West milieu, an extraordinary artist, activist and animateur. His activities span a range from artist and curator to dazzling performer (with the Hidden Cameras, for example). If you are in Toronto, don’t miss his installation at the Sculpture Garden, which just opened.

Art Metropole thanks the Canada Council for the Arts, the Ontario Arts Council, the City of Toronto through the Toronto Arts Council, as well as private donors for their support.

Luis Jacob was born in Lima, Peru, in 1970. Lives and works in Toronto.

Luis Jacob is a Toronto-based multimedia artist and curator concerned with notions of collectivity, and, increasingly, with acts of looking and meaning-making. Jacob studied semiotics and philosophy at the University of Toronto in the early 1990s, and he soon became immersed in local politics and club culture, as well as the art world, all three coming into play in his first decade of output, which often included experimentation with relational aesthetics. In 2005, Jacob showed Habitat at the Art Gallery of Ontario; this, among other things, piqued the interest of then-visiting Documenta 12 curators Ruth Noack and Roger Buergel, who included him in the 2007 event. Since then, Jacob has shown internationally and with great variety, focusing on found objects (his Album series, for instance, part of which is now owned by the Guggenheim Museum in New York) and the nature of the image. A touring retrospective of his work was hosted by Montreal’s Darling Foundry and Toronto’s Museum of Contemporary Canadian Art in 2010 and 2011.

Miguel Jacob is a Toronto-based photographer, born and raised in Lima, Peru. In 2010, Miguel’s photograph of model Coco Rocha won the award for Best Magazine cover at the P & G Beauty Awards. His work has been exhibited at the Alison Milne Gallery, and Birch Libralato Gallery (in collaboration with Luis Jacob, Art Metropole, and ONE800 Gallery). His clients include FASHION Magazine, Chatelaine, GLOW, Canada’s Next Top Model, Bayview Village, Square One, Dufferin Mall, The Bay, Style Her Famous, Foster’s Group, Universal Records, and Warner Brothers. Some of the celebrities/personalities that he has photographed include Michael Bublé, Sass Jordan, Mia Kirshner, Kate Voegele, Tara Spencer-Nairn and Kreesha Turner.
