Tit Pin Project, a performance by Ginger Brooks Takahasi and Paige Gratland

Artists
Ginger Brooks Takahashi and Paige Gratland
Time
7 pm - 9 pm

Chest-bearer’s young and old, male and female, flooded Art Metropole to participate in Paige and Ginger’s performative artist project. The artists decribe it as an on-site performance production line party. Step One: each participant is photographed showing his or her tits. Step Two: the photo is turned into a 2 and a half-inch pin. Step Three: a portrait is taken of the participant wearing the tit pin. Participants are invited to party with the pins afterwards and are encouraged to mix and match or trade.

Ginger Brooks Takahashi (b. 1977) lives in Brooklyn, NY, maintaining a social, project-based practice. She is co-founder of LTTR, a queer and feminist art journal, and projet MOBILIVRE BOOKMOBILE project, a traveling exhibit of artist books and zines. She received her BA from Oberlin College, attended the Whitney Independent Study Program, and is a resident artist at Smack Mellon, 2008-09. Her work has shown in the following exhibitions recently: “Shared Women” at Los Angeles Contemporary Exhibitions, 2007; “Exile of the Imaginary” at the Generali Foundation, Vienna, 2007; and “Locally Localized Gravity” at the Institute of Contemporary Art, Philadelphia, 2007. She has presented public projects at the Serpentine Gallery, London, 2008; documenta 12, Kassel, 2007; Art Metropole, Toronto, 2007; and with Ridykeulous at The Kitchen, NY, 2007.

Filmmaker, video maker, performance artist. Mostly known for her association with the Canadian neo-folk queer band The Hidden Cameras, Gratland’s visual art practice tends to center around queer celebrities, gossip and the actualization of queer sexuality. Her most famous piece Celebrity Lezbian Fists is a series of silicone fists cast from the actual hands of queer cultural icon (JD Samson, Eileen Myles and Jack Halberstam, just to name a few). Her video work gravitates around similar concepts. Her 2004 video The Fabulous Life of Raige and Payne is a mockumentary about the rise and fall of dance-sensations-turned-lesbian-couple Raige and Payne, from luscious lifestyle to their ultimate demise. In Tit Pin (2004), she asked her friend to show their breasts anonymously on camera, made a short film out of it and created pins for everyone to trade.
