Description

Authors: Louise Déry, Michael Snow, Érik Bullot, Jacinto Lageira and Stéfani de Loppinot

Multidisciplinary artist Michael Snow is one of the most inspiring figures to have marked the art world in recent decades. His prolific and protean practice reinvents itself through the ceaseless exploration of wide-ranging visual and acoustic phenomena and enriches itself with mutations made possible by constant technological advances. The ever-evolving art of Michael Snow at once draws on and drives the leading-edge issues of media arts research and dissemination. This bilingual and abundantly illustrated catalogue was published in conjunction with the exhibition of the same name curated by Louise Déry and shown in France, at Le Fresnoy (February-April 2011). It highlights recurrent aspects of Snow’s approach: the window motif as framing device, the oppositions (inside/outside, front/back), the metamorphosis or condensation of image and sound, the staging of technical referents (photographic, filmic, audio), the reflection on space and time. In 2005, the Galerie de l’UQAM held a solo show of the artist’s work and published a booklet devoted to his projection work Solar Breath (Northern Caryatids).
