William Leavitt (born 1941) is a painter, installation artist, and theater director and one of the pioneers of the Los Angeles Conceptual movement. In the latest Ooga Booga publication, Alligator Maze Orchid, Leavitt uses free association to create an extensive collection of sketchbook drawings using fragments of popular and everyday culture to construct playful storylines of environments familiar within Southern California and beyond. The images, shuffled and selected at random, serve as narrative devices and props for Leavitt’s imagined theater. Design by Lauren Graycar.
