Description

That the world is in a pickle, or some kind of a brine, is evident. How do we get out of this jam, or jar? Border Crossings has always looked to artists in all disciplines to show us the way, to shine the light. As we do at least once every year, we immerse ourselves in the alchemy of Paint.

Why not begin with the Renaissance and Raphael? In this issue we have a fine article on the recent exhibition of Raphael’s works at The Met — some rare pieces travelling to New York. Then, we can look forward. As Border Crossings has always done, we talked with artists — we’ve listened for artists’ voices and conducted an unprecedented number of interviews over many years and so we did for this issue.

For new, so new it’s almost breathlessly anticipatory but also so full of thinking: the interview with Amy Sillman. For beauty and tenderness but with rigour: the interview with Elizabeth Peyton. For candour, closely self-scrutinized intelligence and wit, not to mention a kind of selected provocation there’s the interview with Carroll Dunham. To question when drawing does a switch with painting or painting shows its underpinnings and debt to drawing, there is the interview with Martin Pearce. And there are others, and more. Like when Barry Schwabsky, who has shown us how to consider and see painting writes the article, “Painting Against a Foreclosed Future.” Now it is necessary as readers to stop and indeed consider. Philosopher and essayist Mark Kingwell does this too, in his essay, “The Truth in Painting: Seven Notes on Breaking the Frame.”

For this special issue on PAINTING we have gone back, in our Archive section to an issue from 1990 which has a particular resonance for us. It was the issue we titled “LOVE.” It was David Salle’s work on the cover and his conversation with the writer John Hawkes was the feature interview. We asked David Salle to write this section for us.

Reviews of exhibitions always abound in Border Crossings: Richard Avedon, Krystle Silverfox and Balint Zsako, Marigold Santos, An Whitlock, Tania Willard, John Will, Klara Lidén, Christina Mackie, Ljubodrag Andric, Gu Xiong, Sara Hartland-Rowe, Lisa Wood, Eduardo Aquino and Juca Aquino.

And if that isn’t enough and you want more, there is much more in this over-sized issue. You won’t be disappointed. Good art is never disappointing; artists aren’t disappointing (mostly). About what else, and about whom can you say that? In this issue we argue — the venue, the vehicle, the medium is Painting.
