Figures, How Things Look by Denise Kupferschmidt is a selection of drawings, sketches, and materials cut from books and magazines, collected over the years, that retained importance as either inspirational materials or moments of discovery or shift in her studio practice. Created at different times but here grouped together they present a new layer through which to view Kupferschmidt’s iconic drawings.
Denise Kupferschmidt has had solo exhibitions in Chicago, Boston, and most recently in East Hampton and at NADA NY with Halsey McKay Gallery. Her work has been included in exhibitions in New York at Nicole Klagsbrun Gallery, Marvelli Gallery, Lucien Terras, and Eleven Rivington, as well as at Western Exhibitions in Chicago, and Cooper Cole Gallery in Toronto. In 2010 she was chosen as a NADA Emerging Artist in The L Magazine, and in 2011 she was named in Modern Painters’ “100 Artists to Watch”. She was recently featured in the Next Wave Festival at the Brooklyn Academy of Music where she installed two 25 ft. painted murals in the Peter Jay Sharp Building’s Lobby. Denise Kupferschmidt was co-organizer, with Joshua Smith, of “Apartment Show”, a series of roving group shows featuring artists in New York City.
