From the artist: “Rolling Paper is a large-scale reproduction of a piece of scrap paper which was soiled over the course of a couple of years in its use as a surface on which to roll cigarettes from some of Montreal’s finest kerbside blend. Something about the graphic quality of the stain pattern appealed to me; it is far more interesting that any drawing I might have set out to make. Not that I am ever inclined to set out to make a drawing, but perhaps that’s the point. I am always pleased to make something by some round-about method, if not by accident, as in this case, in which a furtive, illicit activity resulted in something that is just like a drawing. Of course, everybody knows that in art, drawing is the basis for everything.”
