A collaborative project combining haikus by Jamie Stewart and drawings by Denise Schatz, each page of this work pairs an image with text in a sparing but suggestive narrative. One gets an intimate, almost cinematic feeling – a sense of following somebody through their experience of living in urban California: “In this “V” of dirt/ so many of life’s premiers/ dirt all around you.” The accompanying grayscale images are equally poetic: an orange seen from the outside and cut open, a set of two lip sticks, one black and one white, and other such enigmatic symbols.
