Jochen Lempert works with the expertise of a trained biologist, the eye of a photographer and the technique of a scientist. His photography examines the friction between nature and culture, specifically the relationship between humans and animals: how mankind interprets animals anthropomorphically or uses them industrially, and how animals conquer new niches within urban spaces, unnoticed by their human neighbours. In his earlier works he collected, archived and arranged the motifs in large groups, stimulating comparative viewing and throwing open multiple associative references. His latest groups of work focus more on formations, patterns, structures, conveying the aleatory potency of flocks of birds, water structures and cloud formations.

Published on the occasion of the exhibition Jochen Lempert at Museum Ludwig, Cologne. 23 April – 13 June, 2010.
