Michalis Pichler’s “Un Coup De Des Jamais N’Abolira Le Hasard: Sculpture” adapts the 1914 edition of the french symbolist poet Stéphane Mallarmé‘s poem of the same name. Using Mallarmé‘s original typographic layout and following Marcel Broodthaer’s adaptation from 1969, Pichler’s version replaces the text with laser-cuts windows, creating a complex arrangement of actual negative space or absence. When turning the pages, numerous shadows and plays of light are created by the cutout windows.
The book is prefaced by the poem written as a rectangular block of text with each line separated by a slash, a layout first transcribed by Broodthaers in 1969.
