Janice Gurney was born in 1949 in Winnipeg, Manitoba. She studied at the School of Art, University of Manitoba, receiving a B.F.A. Honours in 1973. Gurney has exhibited extensively across Canada in numerous solo and group exhibitions. Her work is included in private collections, as well as those of the National Gallery of Canada, The Canada Council Art Bank, and the Winnipeg Art Gallery. Gurney has been the recipient of grants from the Ontario Arts Council and the Canada Council. She has taught at Simon Fraser University, Ontario College of Art and Sheridan College, and was a board member of YYZ Artists’ Outlet, Toronto, from 1982 to 1989. She is represented by the Wynick/Tuck Gallery in Toronto.
